flight costs

We are looking at booking our holiday, and i have spent some time this morning trying to find some cheep flights and they range form £280 to £900 to go for 3 people. how can there be such a range in Price - its the same distance whichever flight it is - i don;t understand - and why would anyone want to spend £900 when they cna spend £280?
